Terry's Chocolate Orange: Tap It and Unwrap It

It looks like an orange, it comes apart like an orange, and it's been a British stocking-filler ritual for generations — give the wrapped ball a sharp tap and it falls into twenty chocolate segments. We stock the Terry's Chocolate Orange range in milk and dark, in both the original ball and the bar, shipped from our New Jersey fulfillment center.

A York institution since 1767

Terry's began in York, England in 1767 — one of Britain's oldest confectioners, and for two centuries a neighbour and rival to the city's other chocolate dynasty, Rowntree. Before the orange, there was a Terry's Chocolate Apple, launched in 1926; it sold for decades before being quietly discontinued, leaving the orange as the survivor.

The 1932 original — and the range today

The Chocolate Orange as we know it arrived in 1932 and never really left. Today the line runs past the original milk ball: a deeper dark version for the cocoa-forward, plus spin-offs like the mint and popping-candy balls that drop the orange flavour entirely. We carry the core orange variants in milk and dark, in ball and bar, alongside the rest of our British sweets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Terry's Chocolate Orange contain real orange?
Yes — the flavour comes from natural orange oil blended into the chocolate, not artificial flavouring, which is why the scent hits the moment you unwrap it. The milk and dark versions use the same orange oil; only the chocolate around it changes.
Is Terry's Chocolate Orange still made in York?
No. It was produced at the Terry's factory in York for most of its history, but manufacturing moved to continental Europe in 2005 after the brand changed hands. The recipe carried over — though the "made in York" nostalgia still follows it around.
What's the difference between the ball and the bar?
The ball is the original segmented sphere. The bar is a flat format that snaps into straight pieces and packs more sturdily for shipping or gifting. Same chocolate-and-orange-oil recipe in each — it's purely a shape-and-format choice.
Is Terry's Chocolate Orange suitable for vegetarians or vegans?
The milk and dark orange balls are suitable for vegetarians but not vegans — both are made with milk. If you're avoiding dairy, none of the current Terry's Chocolate Orange range fits, as even the dark version contains milk.
