How is European licorice different from American licorice?
Most American "licorice" (like red Twizzlers) contains little or no actual licorice root and is sweet and chewy. European licorice is built on real licorice extract and spans a far wider range — including the salty and salmiak styles that barely exist in the US market.
What's the difference between Dutch, Swedish, and Finnish licorice?
Broadly: Dutch drop covers the widest sweet-to-salt range; Swedish lakrits leans salty and often pairs licorice with fruit; and Finnish salmiakki is the most intensely salty, built on ammonium chloride. There's overlap, but each country has a recognisable default.
Is European licorice sweet or salty?
Both — it's a spectrum. Northern and Nordic countries favour salty and salmiak styles, while sweet licorice is widely available too. If you're new, start sweet and move toward salt at your own pace.
