Yes. Karol Wedel opened his confectionery in Warsaw in 1851, making E. Wedel the oldest chocolate manufacturer in Poland, and production has stayed in Warsaw ever since. The brand is a household name across the country and among Polish families abroad, which is why it is the first thing most people look for in a Polish candy aisle.
What does the E in E. Wedel stand for?
Emil Wedel, the founder’s son, who took the business over and put his own handwritten signature on the packaging as a mark of authenticity against imitators. That script signature is still the company logo today, which is why genuine Wedel bars carry a name written in flowing handwriting rather than printed type.
What is Ptasie Mleczko?
Literally “bird’s milk” — a soft marshmallow-style foam enrobed in chocolate, created by Jan Wedel in the 1930s and now a national institution in Poland. It is the single most famous thing the company has ever made, and the name has become a generic term for the whole category of Polish foam sweets.
