Keep German Alive at Home: A German History Podcast for Kids

If you’re raising kids in the US and want German to stay part of their everyday life, here’s a tip from our own family of German-food lovers: a Geschichtspodcast für Kinder, a German history podcast for kids called Von Alexander bis Zarathustra – Geschichte(n) für Kinder. It’s made for children aged 6 to 12, with true stories about famous people, told so well that the grown-ups end up listening too.

Full disclosure: we’re closely connected to this podcast. It’s a sister project, born from the same love of German language and culture that drives everything we do at One Stop German Shop.

What it is

Each episode tells the true story of one person from history in a playful, child-friendly way, in about 12 minutes. A new episode comes out every Monday. Every tenth episode is a themed special, such as what childhood was like in the Middle Ages or how school came to be.

The promise of the show is simple: Hier ist alles wirklich passiert, meaning everything you hear really happened. It isn’t fairy tales. It’s real history, with the key facts plus the surprising little anecdotes that make kids ask “and then what?”

Clara isn’t only the voice of the show; she also creates it. She’s a classical philologist who reads Latin and Greek, and a mother of three. The podcast started with the stories she told her own children about people from history on family hikes.

Why it works for German families in the US

  • It keeps German alive at home. Kids hear rich, natural German about topics they find exciting, not textbook drills. That makes it a good fit for heritage-language families, German Saturday schools and German immersion programs.
  • It fits real life. At around 12 minutes, an episode fits the car ride to school, bedtime or a quiet afternoon. (A bag of German gummy bears for the back seat is optional but recommended.)
  • It’s ad-free and tracking-free. No ads in the podcast or the app, so it’s safe to hand to a child.
  • Women in history get equal space. Kleopatra, Jeanne d’Arc, Anne Frank, Astrid Lindgren, Bertha Benz, Amelia Earhart and Frida Kahlo all have their own episodes.

Five episodes to start with

Several episodes tell American stories in German, which is a great bridge for kids growing up between two cultures:

  1. George Washington: the first US president, told for kids, in German.
  2. Neil Armstrong: the first steps on the Moon.
  3. Amelia Earhart: the pilot who flew across the Atlantic on her own.
  4. Kleopatra: Egypt’s famous queen, and a great first episode.
  5. Ötzi: the 5,000-year-old Iceman found in the Alps.

German brand history fits right in too. There’s an episode on Bertha and Carl Benz, and Margarete Steiff, the founder of the teddy-bear company, follows on November 23.

A free app, quizzes and worksheets

The free “Von A bis Z” app for iPhone and iPad and Android has every episode, plus a quiz and a seek-and-find picture (a Wimmelbild) for each one. Teachers can download free worksheets on eduki. The podcast is already used in kindergartens and primary schools in Germany.
