Haribo: The Original Gummy Bear from Germany

Haribo is one of the most iconic candy brands in the world and the original creator of the gummy bear. Founded by Hans Riegel in Bonn, Germany in 1920, Haribo introduced the first Goldbears, which went on to define the entire world of gummies.

For many people, Haribo is not just another candy brand. It is the blueprint for all gummy bears and gummies in flavor, texture and color.

Haribo Gummy Bears vs Other Gummies

Haribo gummy bears are known for a very specific texture and flavor profile:

  • Firmer chew compared to most American gummies
  • Less sticky, more elastic without unncecessary coatings
  • Distinct authentic fruit flavors rather than generic sweetness
  • Slightly less sugary overall but no compromise on flavor
  • True flavors and exciting, non generic flavor combinations

This is why many people specifically search for Haribo gummy bears, not just gummies in general. I mean, if you've had them, you can immediately tell the difference. No American candy can measure up. And boy have they tried to!

The original Haribo Goldbears remain the most recognized product, but the brand has expanded far beyond that. Thank you, Hans!

Haribo Gummies: Beyond the Bear

In Germany, Haribo is known for its huge variety of gummies, not just bears. It has actually become rather hard to find regular bears with how popular other options of Haribo gummies have become.

You’ll commonly find:

  • Fruit gummies in different shapes and textures
  • Foam-backed gummies (a OSGS Team favorite 🐸)
  • Sour varieties (another classic we can't live without)
  • Mixed texture candies in one bag (the best of the best)
  • Seasonal and limited assortments

German Haribo products can differ from U.S. versions, both in flavor and texture due to regulatory and national taste differences.

Haribo Candy and Licorice

Haribo is also deeply tied to licorice culture in Germany, especially in the northern regions where licorice is more commonly consumed. Probably because it is so close to Scandinavia and the North Sea.

Your favorite gummy brand produces:

  • Sweet licorice
  • Mild salted licorice
  • Mixed gummy and licorice combinations (to play tricks on picky kids. Plot twist, they're all licorice)

This is an important distinction because most American consumers associate Haribo only with gummy bears, while in Germany it is a much broader candy brand.

Haribo in daily German Culture

Haribo is everywhere in Germany. It is not a gimmick, we really do love it that much.

It is:

  • Packed in kids’ lunches
  • Bought for road trips (you've probably paid the dad tax)
  • "Shared" during movie nights
  • Kept at home as everyday candy
  • Used in holiday baskets and gift assortments
  • Perfect for the trendy candy salad that is everywhere on TikTok and Instagram

Unlike some premium chocolate brands, Haribo is considered everyday sweets, not occasional indulgence.
