Scho-Ka-Kola is a caffeinated dark-roast milk chocolate sold in a flat round tin, divided into 16 wedges. Made in Germany since 1935, it combines cocoa with roasted coffee and kola nut, giving roughly the caffeine of a strong espresso per portion — which is why it became the standard-issue ration chocolate for German pilots and drivers, and why it is still bought today by hikers, cyclists, night-shift workers and students.
What Scho-Ka-Kola tastes like
The milk version is smoother and sweeter than the dark, but still noticeably bitter compared with ordinary milk chocolate — the coffee and kola come through clearly on the finish. It is meant to be eaten a wedge at a time rather than a bar at a time.
The tin
The flat metal tin is part of the product. It reseals, survives a rucksack, and has barely changed in ninety years. Sixteen wedges per tin.
